I am a Dalek
April 06, 2016Well not me exactly...
But they did launch an invasion on the kitchen.
Sometimes all you actually need to make something clever and effective is just an idea.
For those of you who don’t know a Dalek (pronounced
DAR-LECK) is a bad guy. Like the worst, for Doctor Who. They have been round
since 1963 scaring the world with their robotic “EXTERMINATE”
Food for birthdays parties away from home are always hard.
Everything must be transportable, some places don’t actually like you bringing
food but don’t have cakes.
These little monsters fit in a reasonable small
container and as I have discovered transport incredibly well.
Like many clever cupcake decorations, they begin with a
basic cupcakes base. Chocolate in this case. The recipe I used was the same as
the Spaghetti cakes I made last week but with 2 tbl of cocoa powder.
So;
115g butter
115g caster sugar
2 eggs
15 self-raising flour
2 tbl milk
Splash of vanilla
2 tbl cocoa powder
Because the recipe is pretty simple and I've explained before here I won't write it all out again.
(Basically butter and sugar, then eggs. Then flour, milk and vanilla.)

It's important that you don't over fill the cases or that makes it more difficult to fit the bodies. Try not to fill more than 3/4 of the way up the pans.
Bake for 17 minutes at 180˚C.
Take out and turn upside down on a cooling rack to cool.

The cases I downloaded from here and just printed on
standard white paper.
Then cut them out and attached their heads to toothpicks.
The icing was a simple chocolate buttercream.

50g butter
100g icing sugar
2 tsp milk
a little splash of vanilla
2 tbl cocoa powder
Beat together until a creamy frosting consistency.
I found the best way to ice the cakes is with a spatula or
knife and thickly slather a layer of icing on the base (which is now the top)
then slip the cases over the top, being careful not to bump the case into the
icing because it will just absorb the oils from the icing.
Stick a toothpick with head in and there you have it!
